Civil Society Expert (Chief Oyedijo) to Presidency & Nigerians:  President Trump is not threatening us; he is calling us to do what is right

Press Statement

Chief ‘Aare’ Oluwasegun Oyedijo, a renowned Civil Society and Development Expert, has called on the Presidency and fellow Nigerians to view President Trump’s recent action with a positive interpretation- as a call to action for Nigeria to re-evaluate and prioritize the safety and well-being of its citizens.

In his statement to the press, Chief Oyedijo lamented the increasing rate of insecurity and the loss of lives across the country.

“We must tell ourselves the truth — there are too many killings in Nigeria, and it is not acceptable. People are dying every second; our roads are unsafe, our hospitals have become points of death, and kidnapping, herdsmen attacks, and banditry have become daily occurrences,” he said.

He noted that Nigerians are gradually losing their sense of sympathy and empathy due to the frequency of tragic incidents, adding that this normalization of loss is a dangerous sign for any society.

“President Trump is not threatening us; he is calling us to do what is right. Nigeria needs serious action, and we must urgently respond by placing greater value on the lives and property of our citizens,” Chief Oyedijo emphasized.

According to him, the Presidency and Nigerians at large should take President Trump’s position as a wake-up call to strengthen national security and ensure that every citizen’s life counts.

He further stated that “a nation that fails to protect the lives of its people is a failed nation.” Chief Oyedijo therefore urged Nigerian leaders at all levels to prioritize the safety, welfare, and dignity of every citizen.

In conclusion, he expressed hope and prayers that Nigeria will not become a failed nation but will instead rise to its responsibilities by safeguarding its people and securing their future.

AWLA Abuja requests protection of girl child through laws, policies, and deliberate action.

Press Statement

The African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) Nigeria Abuja Branch, joins voices across the globe in commemorating the International Day of the Girl Child, held annually on October 11.

This year’s theme,  “INVEST IN GIRLS’ RIGHTS’  Our Leadership, Our Well-being”, reinforces the urgent need to EMPOWER, and continue to protect the girl child through laws, policies, and deliberate action.

At AWLA Abuja, we recognize the immense potential of every girl and reaffirm our commitment to promoting and defending their rights, particularly their right to education, safety, health, and full participation in society.

Despite constitutional protections and international conventions ratified by Nigeria, millions of girls still face significant challenges including child marriage, sexual and gender-based violence, school dropouts, trafficking, and limited access to justice. These systemic barriers continue to rob our girls of their dignity, security, and future.

As a group of women professionals  in legal practice and advocates for justice and equality, AWLA Abuja calls for:

Full implementation and enforcement of child protection laws at federal and state levels, including the Child Rights Act and Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act.

Increased investment in girls’ education and healthcare, especially in underserved and conflict-affected communities.

Strengthening of legal aid and justice mechanisms to ensure girls have access to redress, protection, and support.

End to harmful traditional practices, including early marriage, female genital mutilation (FGM), and other forms of gender-based violence.

Promotion of girls’ leadership and participation in civic, legal, and political spaces.

We believe that an empowered girl child today is a powerful woman tomorrow ; a builder of peaceful, just, and prosperous societies.

AWLA Abuja pledges to continue using the law as a tool for social transformation and remains steadfast in our mission to protect, educate, and empower every girl child.

Let us all take action. Invest in the girl child. Secure her rights. Safeguard her future.
